Making a Difference
Author self portrait
Is War Inevitable? Is Peace Impossible?
Earlier this week I was thinking about war and peace in the world. I thought of the idea of a World Peace Council (it turns out one has existed for more than 50 years!) and the idea of a Peace Pledge.
My trawlings on the net come up with the following:
1. There are over 150 organisations dedicated to Peace around the world. Many have been in existence for many years, others are new formed after or because of September 11th. If we judge by results they are all remarkably ineffective.
2. There have been according to one source 152 wars or armed conflicts of one kind or another around the world since 1945!
3. Another source gives figures for deaths. Uganda for instance has seen over 100,000 killed since 1980 in what is termed by this source a ‘Minor Armed Conflict!”
4. Another source lists 81 armed conflicts of various kinds since 1990!!
The U.S. is on the brink of going to war again against Iraq. If they do so the consequences are unknown, except that the oil price will rise dramatically, petrol may become in short supply, thousands of people, mostly innocent will be killed. The economy already in doubtful order will worsen and the stock markets will decline still further.
History suggests that wars have always existed and that at no time has there ever been a real period of world peace – save for the Garden of Eden! Thus the question is, is Peace like Equality a mythical ideal that can never actually come to pass? If it is possible, what steps can be taken that will actually make a difference? What can you and I do to make any difference whatsoever?

WORLD PEACE POEMS
World Peace Question
Given that the world is warlike
And has always been so,
That weapons encourage violence
Rather than deter it,
That profit creates the arms trade
And employ millions,
That governments lack moral courage
And citizens feel powerless,
That millions feel insecure,
Projecting anger and resentment,
Is there any possibility of World Peace?
World Peace Answer
Given that most people prefer Peace
And have always done so,
That one small step by an individual
Can light a pathway for millions,
That love and kindness are quite usual
Despite bad news predominating.
That charities spring up constantly
Created by caring individuals
That acts of courage are numerous
Unnoticed heroism all around us
Any action you take will make a difference.

American Peace Question
Given that the whole worlds hates us
For our success and wealth,
That we have been the dominant
Power for over half a century
That the world fails to acknowledge
Our enormous contribution
To technology, food production,
Science, computers, you name it,
Despite constant attempts at dialogue
They just don’t speak our language,
Who else will go to war to keep the Peace?
American Peace Answer
Given that World undoubtedly prefers Peace
And has always done so,
That each individual country wants independence,
Seeks secure land, nourishing food, sound water supplies,
Desires control over it’s own raw materials,
Has a right to a fair price for it’s goods and services,
That they love their children as much as we love ours,
If we try humility and understanding in place of arrogance,
Service to others instead of greed and domination,
Providing food and shelter to the poor
Instead of arms to dictators we choose to approve of
Talking peace as the alternative to promoting war,
We will deserve and command genuine respect and thanks.
Each American’s stand for Peace will make all the difference.

Iraqui Peace Question
Given that the imperialist Americans hate us
And it has always been so,
That they want to steal our oil,
Plunder our beloved country,
And overthrow our government,
That they believe erroneously and unjustly
We build weapons of mass destruction
And that we plan to use them very soon,
And they continue to support infidel Israel
Against our Palestinian brothers,
That despite our offer to let in weapons inspectors,
They threaten our small country with all out war,
Desiring to overthrow our great leader Saddam,
They project anger, hostility and hatred
Is there any possibility of Peace?
Iraqui Peace Answer
Given that most Americans prefer Peace
And have always done so,
That their aim is a peaceful world,
With adequate food, water and medicines,
Fair trade and justice for all peoples,
That they already have sufficient oil resources,
That unlike ours, they are a genuine democratic nation,
Whose leader has the power and strength to destroy us,
If we open up all our country to weapons inspectors,
Remove the suppressive dictator Saddam by popular uprising,
Be completely open, honest and peaceful,
In our dealings with all other nations,
Love offered in the face of anger, and peace in place of violence,
Every Iraqui’s stand for Peace will make all the difference.

British Peace Question
Given that we are an island race
And it has always been so,
That we have had to defend ourselves,
Many times against overwhelming odds,
Unflinchingly standing against bullies and aggressors,
Our tenaciousness and bulldog spirit,
Teamwork and camaraderie pulling us through,
Supporting our friends and allies,
Defeating even the most obdurate enemies,
And despite our love of free speech and freedom,
We have to battle and go to war to defend it,
Is there any possibility of Peace?
British Peace Answer
Given that most British people prefer Peace
And have always done so,
That we have had remarkable heroes,
Leading us to victory in famous wars,
Widening our wisdom and understanding,
And helping transform the world’s civilisation,
Our unique heritage should stand for mediation,
Arguing for communication and empathy,
Negotiation, developing goodwill and relatedness
With all peoples, similar and dissimilar to our own,
Love offered in the face of anger,
And peace in place of violence,
Every Britain’s stand for Peace will make all the difference.

Israeli Peace Question
Given that the Arabs hate us
And it has always been so,
That they encourage children to violence
As suicide bombers
That they want to destroy Israel
And force us into the sea
That they have no meaningful government
With whom we can talk,
That despite our generous offerings
They project anger and hatred,
Is there any possibility of Peace?
Israeli Peace Answer
Given that most Arab people prefer Peace
And have always done so,
That they want a land of their own
And are entitled to have one,
That they love their children
As much as we love ours,
That housing, jobs, food and water
Would create secure families.
Love if offered in the face of anger,
Land if offered in place of violence,
Your stand for Peace will make all the difference.

Palestinian Peace Question
Given that the Jews hate us
And it has always been so,
That they have stolen our land
And killed our families
That they don’t want Palestinians
To have a state of any kind
That they have a powerful army
And the West supports them
That despite our generous offerings
They project anger and hatred,
Is there any possibility of Peace?
Palestinian Peace Answer
Given that most Jewish people prefer Peace
And have always done so,
That they want a secure land
And are entitled to have one,
That they love their children
As much as we love ours,
That if we accept their rights
And negotiate sensibly.
Love offered in the face of anger,
And peace in place of violence,
Your stand for Peace will make all the difference.

Protestant Peace Question
Given that the Catholics hate us
And it has always been so,
That they encourage violence
And still kill our people,
That they want a United Ireland,
And to take over our institutions,
That they are bombers and killers
Whom we cannot trust.
That despite their constant promises
They have never properly disarmed,
Is there any possibility of Peace?
Protestant Peace Answer
Given that most Catholic people prefer Peace
And have always done so,
That they want recognition
As citizens with rights and equality
That they love their children
As much as we love ours,
That stopping marches in their areas
Would create secure families.
Love if offered in the face of anger,
Cooperation if offered in the place of hostility,
Your stand for Peace will make all the difference.
30.08.02
Catholic Peace Question
Given that the Protestants hate us
And it has always been so,
That they have held us down
Dominated us for centuries
That they don’t want to share power
Or allow us our just rights
That they intrude into our spaces
And kill and maim our people
That despite attempts at dialogue
They project anger and hatred,
Is there any possibility of Peace?
Catholic Peace Answer
Given that most Protestants prefer Peace
And have always done so,
That they want a secure land
And are entitled to have one,
That they love their children
As much as we love ours,
That if we give up all our arms
And negotiate sensibly,
Love offered in the face of anger,
And peace in place of violence,
Your stand for Peace will make all the difference.

The Peace Gun
The Peace Gun is a weapon which in today’s technological world is surely inventable. I imagine it has been invented but is not for public knowledge as it would dramatically effect arms industries.
It is obvious that if any army was equipped with a weapon that would stun an opponent and freeze their movements without harm, it would be a way of reducing violence and increasing peace. It would be of enormous value to Police, Army and Civilians. The only downside I can see would be that it would provide a wonderful weapon for burglars and thieves. There is no doubt a way round this however!
SPECIFICATION
It must work instantaneously
Must disable and freeze a person for 1-5 minutes without losing consciousness or other ill-effects. Ideally they should not lose the power of speech!
Must be based on painless, harmless light and/or sound or inhalation.
Must be able to be directed specifically to an individual at a distance of at least 20 feet.
Must be hand held device, ideally pocket sized.
Must be cheap to produce
Any offers??
